Excursions, In-Scursions & Camps

Although there is little documented it is known that the children of North Pine (and later Petrie) school would often leave the campus for various events that could be termed ‘excursions’. For example, they would perform at special events in the community, they would go to the local show and the Brisbane Exhibition; they might travel to the arts hall to watch a special event on film such as the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

It would be impossible to catalogue all of the wonderful learning experiences that students have had over time while away from school or home but we have found a few!

As we move through to the present day, ‘Incursions’ (despite the name) are a way of children learning about specific topics away from the classroom, however they are still on the school grounds. For example, occasionally an industry specialist or a scientist etc. may address the students class by class about their area of expertise. This is generally coupled with the curriculum they are learning about in the classroom.

At Petrie State School in 2014 students attend camp for a week in year 5 and year 7 (this will be year 6 from 2015 as year 7 moves to high school).

Tallebudgera School Camp has been part of Petrie tradition since the 1980s and to this day the senior students still go there for their camp.

Ca. 1963: GINGER FACTORY EXCURSION

“In Grade 8, we were taken on an excursion to the Ginger Factory at Buderim – only when we arrived there it was to find that the Ginger Factory was closed. We spent and excellent day down at the beach swimming, eating ice-cream and getting sunburnt.”

1986: CAMPS FOR YOUNGER GRADES PREVIOUSLY UNHEARD OF

“For grades two and three I had a teacher named Mrs Dempsey. One of the stand out events was that of the camps we went on. In grade two Mrs Dempsey shocked the school by having the class sleep on her property at Whiteside. Again in grade three our class went on a camp, this time a little further away – Friday Creek (near Kilcoy). They were both heaps of fun, but this was a time when only the grade seven classes went on a camp. Other memories include the book writing competitions we entered and the budgies we kept in the classroom. (I had one of them until a couple of years ago).”

2012: LAMINGTON DRIVE FOR YEAR 7 ‘TALLY’ CAMP

Year Seven Lamington Drive

The Year Sevens are holding a lamington drive over the next two weeks to help raise funds to go towards their camp costs.

If you would like to purchase any lamingtons you will need to order through a year seven student. All orders need to be placed by the Friday the 8 June. The lamingtons will be delivered to school on Wednesday the 13 June for collection by parents and students.

Year 5 Camp Reports [2013]

“One thing that I loved about the Year 5 camp was going canoeing on the lake. I learnt to go backwards on the canoes and thought that was a fun thing to learn. Another great thing we did on the canoe was trying to get as many people on the canoe as possible. I learnt that we needed team work to get the canoe back to shore. I was so sad to leave the camp. I wish it went on forever, but I am so glad that we all had fun and learnt something new.” – Katie 5B

“Year 5 camp was the most amazing experience of my life. My favourite activity was the glider possum because we went up really high. I was so surprised at how much team work was involved. We needed each person to try as hard as they could so that everyone could have a turn. I just can’t wait to go on my next school camp.” – Tienna 5B

“WOW! Camp was so much fun with all the encouragement and team work. Possum Pull had to be the best because of all the team work involved in it. We all helped each other put the helmets and harnesses on. If someone was afraid of heights we all walked up and down.” – Montana 5A

“Who wouldn’t want to go to camp, it was such an adventure!!! At first I didn’t want to go to camp, but at the end of it I wanted to stay longer!!! One of the first team activities was canoeing. We had to get an oar and hop into the canoe and we had to speak to each other so we could go the way we wanted to go. IT WAS FUN!!” – Sophie 5A

2013: CAMPS ARE A BIT EXPENSIVE NOW-A-DAYS

Our camping program will also be different next year with Year 6 and Year 7 students attending Tallebudgera Beach Outdoor Education School, and the Year 5 students continuing to attend camp at Mapleton. This may have a financial impact on families with the Year 7 camp this year costing just under $300 and the Year 5 camp costing just around $250. If your children will be in Year 5, 6 or 7 in 2014, I encourage you to start a savings plan to ensure your child has every opportunity to attend these wonderful camps.

2013: GALLERY OF MODERN ART, SOUTH BRISBANE

Year 7 GOMA Excursion

“On the last day of Term 2, the year 7 students visited the Gallery of Modern Art (G.O.M.A.). While we were there we observed elements of design in different art works, including Indigenous Art. We participated in interesting activities that included mask making, letters to our lost loved ones and writing positive messages. We would like to thank the parents and teachers for giving us this experience.”

You know things are good when you get a letter from a parent of a year 7 student providing feedback about how positive the week was. Mr Weertman and Ms Kemp need to be congratulated for the 24 hours a day teaching and support for the students for the five days. Thankyou!”

2013: GET DOWN LOW AND GO, GO, GO! YEAR 1 SOSE AND FIRE SAFETY

School Work

On Thursday Year 1 walked to the Petrie Fire Station as part of the SOSE Unit, Rules and Safety. A BIG thank you to Mr Damien Atkins who coordinated the planning and activities of the excursion.

The students especially enjoyed the pretend smoke in the house and practicing their “Get down low and go, go, go!” They also learnt not to put water onto an oil fire and saw what the consequences were if we did do this – a huge ball of flames and smoke. The students also got to hold the water hose and see the Fire Truck go out to a real emergency. Thank you also to the volunteers who walked down and back from the school.
